Editorial policy
How we write, fact-check and correct the content we publish.
Last updated
HomeDeal publishes buying guides, how-to articles, and editorial product content alongside our shop. Here's how that content is sourced, reviewed and corrected.
Who writes for us
- Every guide is published under a named author. You can see the full team — including credentials, bio, and where relevant LinkedIn — on our editorial team page.
- Where a piece is produced by the in-house team rather than a single writer, we label it as an editorial persona. This is a legal and widely-used practice in UK publishing — but we'd rather be upfront than hide it behind a pseudonym.
- We pay freelance contributors at market rate. Contributors disclose any relationships that could create a conflict of interest before briefing starts.
Safety-critical topics
For safety-sensitive categories — electrics, pressure washers, chemical products, ladders, fall protection — we add a Reviewed by byline naming a qualified reviewer (e.g. "Reviewed by Jane Smith, NICEIC-registered electrician"), and cite official UK sources such as HSE, the Royal Horticultural Society, NHS, and manufacturer documentation.
This is in line with Google's E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness) guidance for topics that can affect reader health or finances.
Sourcing and fact-checking
- Technical specifications come from manufacturer datasheets, not marketplace descriptions.
- Price claims are checked against the UK Omnibus Directive — we show the lowest price of the previous 30 days next to any sale price.
- Statistics and claims are linked to their primary source. Where we've tested a product ourselves, we say so and describe the test conditions.
- We update evergreen guides at least once a year. The Last reviewed date is shown on the article; the Published date is preserved in the article metadata.
Affiliate relationships and commercial disclosure
- HomeDeal sells products directly; our guides recommend products we stock. This is disclosed on every guide.
- Where a guide features a competitor product for genuine comparison, we label external affiliate links clearly and disclose the commercial relationship.
- Commercial teams do not approve editorial content. Editorial decisions — what we cover, how we rate it, whether we recommend it — are made independently.
Corrections policy
If you spot a factual error, email hello@homedeal.co.uk with the article URL and the correction. We respond within 5 working days with one of three outcomes:
- Correction — we update the article and append a dated correction note at the bottom.
- Clarification — the original text was technically right but could mislead; we reword and note the edit.
- No change — we disagree, and explain why, in a reply email. You're welcome to escalate to our editorial lead.
Articles with material corrections carry a Correction badge in the byline area, linking to the correction log at the bottom of the article.
Retraction policy
If an article is substantially wrong, plagiarised, or ethically compromised beyond correction, we retract it. Retracted articles are replaced with a dated retraction notice at the original URL — we don't silently delete content from the web.
AI-generated content disclosure
We use AI tools to assist with research, outlining, and first drafts. Every published piece is reviewed and edited by a named human author before publication. We don't publish unedited AI-generated content as editorial.
User-generated content
Reviews and Q&A are moderated against our community rules. We don't edit reviews for tone, but we do remove content that is defamatory, discloses personal data, or violates UK law. Incentivised reviews — where we've sampled a product to a reviewer — are labelled as such.
